OUR MISSION
To end devastating Waiting Lists for community services and
supports for people with mental retardation and their families.

What is the Campaign ?
In December 1998, the PA Waiting List Campaign was established
in response to an outcry of people and families who were in crisis
across the Commonwealth. There were long Waiting Lists for people with Mental Retardation and no funding to support their needs. Through our continuous advocacy efforts we have brought the interests of people and families to the forefront. A "Long Term Plan to Address the Waiting List for Mental Retardation Services in Pennsylvania" and a six-year state-funded Initiative was developed. We are working with the PA Office of Mental Retardation to update the Waiting List Plan to present to the Governor and Legislature. Many of those waiting have parents that are 80 to 90 years old who have had little or no relief from their life-long care giving; others have health difficulties that make continued caregiving next to impossible.

Each year hundreds of young adults graduate from high school and increase the numbers of adults waiting for services from a system which cannot support them. Many sit at home, losing skills they will have to learn over again.

The Goal

To build a system that has the capacity to provide services in a timely fashion to all persons needing and requiring services and supports.
